About the position

The Memory Care Program Specialist at Elderwood is responsible for providing therapeutic and social programming to meet the physical and emotional needs of residents with dementia. This role involves creating and managing daily memory care activities, ensuring resident participation, and assisting with meal services. The specialist works under the direction of the Director of Activities and the Director of Memory Care, contributing to the overall well-being of residents.

Responsibilities

  • Respond immediately to residents' needs and requests.
  • Assist residents with therapeutic and social activities designed to enhance their physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
  • Provide feeding assistance after completing training, as needed.
  • Notify Licensed Nurse of changes in residents' conditions or needs.
  • Maintain facility standards for resident care.
  • Read and understand task assignments, and report verbally and record care in writing.
  • Display genuine concern for the elderly and maintain a patient and compassionate attitude towards residents.
  • Cooperate with others and follow directions effectively.
  • Attend employee council meetings and departmental meetings, offering constructive suggestions when possible.
  • Generate ideas to improve the quality of care for residents or increase job productivity and satisfaction.
  • Perform all job duties according to safety rules and practices required for this position.
  • Exhibit the highest level of customer service towards staff, residents, and visitors.
  • Utilize electronic timekeeping system as directed and follow policy regarding electronic devices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Education, or related field OR Certified Occupational Therapist (COTA) OR Associate's Degree with 1-2 years of experience in long-term care activities.
  • Current, valid state required certification or license in the state of work or willingness to obtain National Certification in Activities within 1 year.
  • Certification in dementia and/or behavior management (e.g., CDT) or willingness to obtain within 1 year.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and web-based applications.
  • Current, valid driver license (if applicable).
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with dementia population desired.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in dementia and/or behavior management (e.g., CDT) or willingness to obtain within 1 year.
