About the position

The Mental Health Clinician position at the Bergen County Sheriff's Office involves providing comprehensive mental health services to inmates at the Bergen County Jail. The role focuses on assessment, care planning, and coordination of services to support individuals with significant mental health issues during their incarceration and transition back to the community. The clinician will work collaboratively with a team to ensure optimal outcomes for clients, reducing reliance on emergency services and inpatient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strengths-based services to ensure engagement, assessment, care planning development and implementation, and monitoring of assigned clients.
  • Conduct thorough mental health and substance use assessments upon inmate incarceration.
  • Complete suicidal assessments and determine appropriate care plans.
  • Provide referrals to in-house and post-release community programs and services.
  • Collaborate with other Mental Health team members to facilitate service delivery from incarceration to the community.
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and unit activities.
  • Provide professional individual and group therapy services.
  • Maintain essential case documentation as required.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with professionals both inside and outside the jail.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid New Jersey license (LSW, LCSW, LAC, or LPC) in good standing.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness involved with the Criminal Justice System preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and outstanding project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • LCADC certification preferred.
