About the position

The Mental Health Counselor plays a vital role within the Center for Healthy Living at Long Island University, focusing on providing mental health support specifically to graduate and doctoral students, particularly in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This position involves direct counseling, program development, and collaboration with campus partners to enhance student well-being and support services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct counseling, group therapy, and crisis intervention services to graduate and doctoral students.
  • Develop and implement mental health and well-being programs tailored to graduate and doctoral students in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Serve as an on-call administrator for mental health counseling and student emergencies.
  • Oversee the Health and Wellness Programming Calendar.
  • Offer guidance and support to College of Veterinary Medicine staff and administrators on mental health and student support matters.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to deliver exceptional student support and training in health and well-being.
  • Ensure superior customer service at the Center for Healthy Living for students and families in person or via phone.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain licensure and contribute to community and campus outreach.
  • In collaboration with the Director, conduct regular assessments of the Center for Healthy Living and provide monthly, semester, and annual reports to Student Affairs and University Assessment teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Center for Healthy Living.

Requirements

  • Degree in counseling/clinical psychology, social work, or related field.
  • Two to three years of experience in a clinical or counseling role.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
  • Experience working with young adult and adult populations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Supervisory and management experience is preferred.
