The Mental Health Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Psych NP) within the corrections industry is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health care to incarcerated individuals. This role involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders, along with the development and implementation of individualized care plans. The Psych NP will conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, including psychiatric evaluations, to diagnose mental health disorders in incarcerated individuals. They will develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on clinical assessments, evidence-based practices, and patient needs. In addition to treatment planning, the Psych NP will prescribe, adjust, and monitor psychotropic medications, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to treatment protocols. They will provide crisis intervention and management for individuals experiencing acute psychiatric episodes and collaborate with other healthcare providers, correctional staff, and external agencies to coordinate patient care and ensure continuity of care. Education is also a key component of this role, as the Psych NP will educate patients on mental health conditions, treatment options, and medication management. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and medication logs, is essential. The Psych NP will participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and training sessions as required, adhering to all state and federal regulations, as well as facility policies and procedures related to mental health care in a correctional setting. Additionally, they will provide consultation and support to correctional staff regarding mental health issues and the management of mentally ill inmates, engaging in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the delivery of mental health services within the facility.
