About the position

The Mental Health Technician/Assistant (MHT/Asst) at Houston Methodist plays a crucial role in supporting the physiological and psychosocial needs of patients under the supervision of registered nurses. This position involves effective communication, performing delegated tasks, and maintaining patient care records. The MHT/Asst also serves as a mentor to new staff and assists in training, while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with peers, staff, and visitors to promote mutual understanding and problem resolution.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional care team to report pertinent patient care information and facilitate treatment goals.
  • Serve as a Preceptor for new hires and assist in training and orientation of staff.
  • Perform and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Record care administered and maintain accurate patient records, including transcription of physician orders and medical records.
  • Organize workflow and manage multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Perform treatments and procedures in accordance with established policies and report observations to the licensed nurse.
  • Assist with maintaining and cleaning patient care equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate scheduling of appointments to achieve positive patient outcomes and maintain accurate records.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (GED or partial/full completion of post-secondary education).
  • Minimum two years of acute care hospital experience if certified as a CNA or CMA; otherwise, three years of Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant experience.
  • Three years of experience as a Mental Health Technician in a psychiatric/substance abuse setting with specialized training in crisis intervention and prevention.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification (AHA) and NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification (CPI) or equivalent within 30 days of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic health records, specifically Epic.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
