About the position

The Mental Health Technician/Assistant (MHT/Asst) at Houston Methodist plays a crucial role in supporting the physiological and psychosocial needs of patients under the supervision of registered nurses. This position involves performing patient care activities, recording data, and utilizing therapeutic communication techniques. The MHT/Asst also serves as a mentor to new staff and may require travel for home visits, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient care activities of daily living (ADLs) such as hygiene, nutrition, and mobility under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Record care administered according to established procedures and perform clerical duties including maintaining patient records.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional care team to communicate pertinent patient care information and facilitate treatment goals.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new hires and assist in training and orienting staff.
  • Perform treatments and procedures in accordance with established policies and report observations to the licensed nurse.
  • Organize workflow and manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (GED or partial/full post-secondary education).
  • If certified as a CNA or CMA, a minimum of two years acute care hospital experience is required; if not certified, three years of Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant experience is needed.
  • Three years of experience as a Mental Health Technician in a psychiatric/substance abuse setting with specialized training in crisis intervention and prevention.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) certification required.
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification required within 30 days of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic health records, specifically Epic.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
