About the position

The Mental Health Technician/Assistant (MHT/Asst) at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting the physiological and psychosocial needs of patients under the supervision of registered nurses. This full-time position involves performing patient care activities, recording data, and utilizing therapeutic communication techniques. The MHT/Asst also serves as a mentor to new staff and may require travel for home visits, ensuring a comprehensive approach to patient care in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and visitors to promote understanding and problem resolution.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional care team to report pertinent patient care information and facilitate treatment goals.
  • Serve as a Preceptor for new hires and assist in training and orientation of staff.
  • Perform and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Record care administered according to established procedures and maintain accurate patient records.
  • Organize workflow and manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Perform treatments and procedures in accordance with established policies and report observations to the licensed nurse.
  • Assist with maintaining and cleaning equipment and supplies, ensuring they are in safe working order.
  • Coordinate scheduling of appointments to achieve positive patient outcomes and maintain accurate records.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (GED or partial/full post-secondary education).
  • Minimum two years of acute care hospital experience if certified as a CNA or CMA; or three years of Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant experience if not certified.
  • Three years of experience as a Mental Health Technician in a psychiatric/substance abuse setting with specialized training in crisis intervention and prevention.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) certification required.
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification required within 30 days of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic health records, specifically Epic.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Strong time management skills.
