About the position

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Program Coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring seamless care coordination for patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery at Augusta Health. This position requires collaboration with the medical office manager and the MBS Director to develop and implement the needs of the MBS program while ensuring compliance with the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) standards. The coordinator will be responsible for educating both patients and hospital staff about the program and its requirements, as well as developing initiatives aimed at improving the quality of patient care. In this role, the MBS Program Coordinator will engage in various activities including patient education, leading support groups, and facilitating training for support group leaders. The coordinator will also be responsible for reviewing and summarizing patient psychiatric evaluations for discussions with the bariatric team, ensuring that all aspects of patient care are addressed. The position requires a high level of interpersonal and communication skills to promote a team-oriented approach to patient care, as well as excellent written and verbal skills to develop educational materials for patients. The MBS Program Coordinator will also be involved in the continuous improvement of healthcare quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness within the organization. This includes staying updated on best practices in bariatric care and implementing changes as necessary to enhance patient outcomes. The role is essential in fostering a supportive environment for patients navigating their weight loss journey, ensuring they receive the highest standard of care throughout the process.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the medical office manager and MBS Director to ensure seamless care coordination for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.
  • Develop and implement MBS program needs and ensure compliance with MBSAQIP standards.
  • Educate patients and hospital staff about the MBS program and its requirements.
  • Develop initiatives to positively impact quality patient care.
  • Lead support groups and facilitate training for support group leaders.
  • Review and summarize patient psychiatric evaluations for discussion with the bariatric team.
  • Develop written materials for patient education and support.
  • Assist with website forums related to bariatric care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Current and valid Registered Nurse license in Virginia or a Compact agreement state, or Registered Dietitian license in Virginia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN) certification or nationally recognized obesity/bariatric certification for registered dieticians within one year of eligibility required.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a registered nurse or registered dietitian.
  • At least three years of current experience in the area of bariatrics preferred.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills to promote a team approach.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
