About the position

The Metadata + Digital Projects Coordinator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is responsible for overseeing cataloging efforts for various special collections, including the Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection and the Fashion Resource Center. This role involves managing digitization projects, metadata production, and data entry, while collaborating with the Library Special Collections + Digital Services team to enhance collections management. The coordinator will also supervise student assistants and contribute to the development of policies and procedures for digital collections.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate cataloging efforts for special collections in SAIC Digital Collections.
  • Manage day-to-day tasks related to digitization projects and metadata production.
  • Classify materials according to the Library of Congress Classification and other metadata schemas.
  • Develop and manage digital collections metadata workflows and projects in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Provide work-related statistics and data to assist with decision-making.
  • Assist SAIC faculty, students, and image researchers as needed.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise student assistants.
  • Train staff on standard schemas, vocabularies, and tools for metadata creation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in visual arts, design, or architecture preferred.
  • Two years of experience working with metadata and digital collections required.
  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Drupal or Islandora preferred.
  • Knowledge of cataloging, metadata schemas, standards, and tools.
  • Knowledge of digitization standards and data preservation practices.
  • Experience with library and archival processes for handling materials.

  • Experience with object-based cataloging practices.
  • Proficiency with standard office hardware and software.
  • Attention to detail and ability to learn new systems rapidly.
