About the position

The Metadata Librarian for the Humanities at New York University will oversee the creation and maintenance of metadata for a variety of humanities-related resources, both physical and digital. This role focuses on developing guidelines for metadata application, optimizing resource discovery, and promoting inclusive metadata practices. The librarian will engage with community stakeholders to enhance representation in metadata, contribute to linked data projects, and support the Libraries' mission to advance knowledge in the humanities.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain metadata for humanities-related resources.
  • Develop metadata application guidelines to enhance resource discovery.
  • Design sustainable metadata strategies and controlled vocabularies.
  • Remediate outdated descriptive language in metadata.
  • Promote diverse and inclusive metadata practices through community engagement.
  • Contribute to linked data and linked open data projects.
  • Develop guidelines and tools for institutional and national metadata policies.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one graduate degree in a humanities-related field.
  • A second graduate degree is required for tenure.
  • One graduate degree must be an MS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of encoding standards such as MARC and non-MARC.
  • Experience in original and complex cataloging using content standards like RDA and LC Subject Headings.
  • Experience with bibliographic utilities such as OCLC Connexion and ILS/Library Service Platform.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bibliographic proficiency in at least one non-Latin-script language (Hebrew or Greek preferred).
  • Working knowledge in at least one non-English European language.
  • Knowledge of and experience with at least one scripting language (e.g., Python).
  • Experience with digital humanities projects and research tools.
  • Experience with metadata remediation tools such as MARCEdit and Open Refine.
