About the position

The Metallurgist 2 position at Shultz Steel involves planning, processing, and delivering metallurgically correct products, particularly in the forging industry. The role requires a strong understanding of materials, safety practices, and the ability to analyze and optimize manufacturing processes. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with production specifications, writing technical reports, and providing technical assistance to both customers and shop personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Reads production, heating, or rolling schedule to determine processing specifications.
  • Observes processing of material; reads gauges, clocks, and automatic recorder; and records and compares information with schedules to ensure compliance with processing specifications.
  • Writes reports describing processing delays and deviations.
  • Reviews production deviation reports, corrective actions and root causes of deviations to ensure feedback into the ERP system.
  • Coordinates cross functionally for maintenance and repair of machine units and tooling.
  • Coordinates with management to load dies for the next day's production.
  • Maintains current backlog of workload and escalates deviations from production schedule with proposed corrective actions.
  • Responsible for reporting of production and employee hours.
  • Prepares daily and weekly production schedule to ensure company targets are achieved.
  • Completes furnace light up sheets.
  • Identifies tooling or material shortages and follows up with management.
  • Possesses broad knowledge of aircraft structural and/or engine materials produced by hot forming and forging.
  • Writes procedures for control and travelers of forged metal parts.
  • Reviews sales quotations, purchase orders, planning travelers, customer/industry specifications and drawings, testing and outside vendor purchase orders, and final shipping documents for metallurgical and technical correctness.
  • Provides technical review of raw material procurement purchase orders.
  • Performs analysis and experimental design of data processes as they relate to manufacturing of metallic aerospace products.
  • Reviews new or revised specifications and issues specification summary for master specification files.
  • Provides process control for all forging and heat treatment steps on job travelers.
  • Submits and follows up on drawings, manufacturing plans, forging and heat treatment procedures.
  • Applies the correct and most cost-effective processes, along with the proper materials technology (applied R D), which will result in Company profits.
  • Reviews chemistry and test results of specific heat or conversion to determine its applicability for specific file jobs and release material into production.
  • Provides technical assistance to customers and shop personnel.
  • Gathers and analyzes data to optimize processes and reduce nonconformities.
  • Participates and leads projects focused on continuous improvement.
  • Assists Quality Control in auditing outside vendors who provide heat treating and product testing services.
  • Identifies process deviations and provides information to Quality for submittals.
  • Troubleshoots failure analysis, determining cause and corrective actions.
  • Provides forge process supervision and witnesses forging, melting, and heat-treating operations as well as non-destructive inspections, and destructive testing.
  • Writes technical reports and internal process specifications.
  • Directly and/or indirectly supervises Process Controller, some laboratory functions and occasionally planning/traveler writers.

Requirements

  • Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in prior roles preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and plant personnel.
  • Ability to advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to write clear, concise technical reports.
  • Ability to set up complete experiments.
  • Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience with hot forming/forging of Titanium and its alloys; Aluminum alloys; Steels, such as 300M, 4340, 15-5/13-8/17-4 PH; Refractory metals and alloys, such as Inco 625/718, Waspalloy, etc.
