About the position

The City of Oxnard's Water Division is seeking a Meter Reader Extra Help to assist in providing safe and reliable drinking water to our customers while ensuring the highest level of customer service and transparency to the residents of Oxnard. This position is designed for individuals who are looking to contribute to the community by performing essential tasks related to meter reading and customer service. The Meter Reader will be responsible for taking and recording meter readings on assigned routes, reviewing the consistency of these readings, and reporting any unusual incidents or inconsistencies. Additionally, the role involves maintaining meter boxes and reporting defects in water meters, as well as delivering notices regarding delinquent accounts and returned checks. The Meter Reader will also be tasked with closing and locking meters on delinquent accounts and reporting any violations related to water consumption. The work schedule for this position is typically Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Fridays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with every other Friday off. However, depending on operational needs, staff may be assigned fewer hours than the standard work hours. The position may also require additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. It is important to note that this is an Extra Help position, which means it is not expected to last more than 960 hours, and employees in this role will not be eligible for benefits beyond those required by federal or state law. The City of Oxnard operates under an at-will employment policy, allowing either the employee or the City to terminate employment at any time, with or without notice. In this role, the Meter Reader will also perform data entry tasks, assist in updating and maintaining meter account information, and respond to inquiries and concerns from the public. The position requires effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, and a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is necessary. Customer service experience is highly desirable, and candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English. Responsibilities

  • Take and record meter readings on assigned routes.
  • Review consistency of meter readings and report unusual incidents or inconsistencies.
  • Maintain meter boxes and report defects in water meters.
  • Deliver notices regarding delinquent accounts and returned checks.
  • Close and lock meters on delinquent accounts.
  • Report rules and regulations violations related to water consumption.
  • Review and report conditions that require a rate change for utility services.
  • Identify addresses for new service and provide notice related to service application process.
  • Turn water service on for new customers.
  • Obtain weekly route information from the system.
  • Perform data entry and assist in updating and maintaining meter account information and related files.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries and concerns from the public.
  • Provide general information on procedures and processes and refer complex inquiries to appropriate resources.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Customer service experience is highly desirable.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
