About the position

The Meter Reader position is responsible for performing field work functions related to reading and recording water usage data from meters. This role involves operating a motor vehicle to conduct meter reading activities, performing basic repairs on meters, and ensuring accurate data collection for residential, commercial, and industrial water meters. The position requires regular communication with supervisors and the public, as well as maintaining records and documentation related to meter readings and service requests.

Responsibilities

• Locates and reads residential, commercial, and industrial water meters on an assigned route.
• Records water meter data utilizing a portable computerized meter reading device.
• Cleans meters and checks for malfunctions; performs basic repairs and reports problems to the supervisor.
• Operates a motor vehicle to conduct meter reading activities and performs minor vehicle maintenance as needed.
• Cuts off delinquent accounts and prepares various forms, reports, and work orders.
• Inspects visible plumbing for water leaks and repairs service lines as necessary.
• Conducts special readings to verify excessively high or low water consumption.
• Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio to provide information and respond to service requests.
• Trims weeds/shrubbery around meter boxes and cleans truck bays.
• Recommends policies and procedures to support quality services by the Department.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license.
• No previous experience required.
