The Meter Services Technician D position at National Grid involves a variety of responsibilities centered around the installation, maintenance, and reading of gas meters. This role requires physical stamina as technicians will be expected to walk long distances, climb stairs, and carry gas meters and tools. The technician will also need to interact positively and professionally with customers, even in challenging situations such as service turn-offs or collections. A professional appearance and demeanor are essential, as this position is customer-facing. Technicians will work independently in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. They will be responsible for leaving missed reading cards according to established procedures and must be vigilant in identifying and reporting unsafe or abnormal operating conditions in the field. This includes checking for stopped meters, incorrect constants, and atmospheric corrosion on gas meter piping, as well as issuing warning tags when necessary. The role also includes the installation and replacement of automated meter-reading devices, performing physical locks on gas meters during emergencies, and assisting other technicians as needed. Technicians will prepare reports, maintain logs, and perform basic arithmetic computations. A valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required, as technicians will drive company vehicles for a significant portion of their workday. They must also be prepared to respond to emergencies and work extended hours when necessary. After six months in the role, additional responsibilities may include field collection work, advanced consumption jobs, securing inactive gas accounts, and conducting inspections of public assembly buildings. Candidates must pass an aptitude test and physical assessment, and they will be subject to drug testing as part of the federal regulations governing safety-sensitive positions.
