About the position

The position involves working as a technician for National Grid, where the primary responsibilities include performing various tasks related to gas meter reading and maintenance. The technician must possess the physical ability to walk long distances, climb stairs, and carry gas meters, tools, and materials. This role requires the technician to interact positively and professionally with customers, even in challenging situations such as service turn-offs and collections. A professional appearance and demeanor are essential, as the technician will be a customer-facing representative of the company. The technician will work independently in all types of weather conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, and extreme temperatures. Responsibilities include leaving missed reading cards according to established procedures, identifying and reporting unsafe or abnormal operating conditions, and installing or replacing automated meter-reading devices. In emergency situations, the technician may need to perform physical locks on gas meters and assist other technicians or leaders as required. Additionally, the technician will prepare necessary reports, maintain files and logs, and perform simple arithmetic computations. A valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required, as the technician will need to drive a company vehicle for a significant portion of the workday. The role also involves responding to emergency situations and working extended hours as needed. After six months in the role, the technician may take on additional responsibilities, including field collection work and advanced consumption jobs.

Responsibilities

  • Walk long distances and climb stairs without undue fatigue.
  • Carry gas meters, tools, and materials, and move heavy gas appliances.
  • Interact positively and professionally with customers, including during difficult situations.
  • Present a professional appearance and demeanor as a customer-facing representative.
  • Work independently in all types of weather conditions.
  • Leave missed reading cards in accordance with established procedures.
  • Identify, report, and document unsafe or abnormal operating conditions in the field.
  • Install and replace automated meter-reading devices.
  • Perform physical locks on gas meters in emergency situations.
  • Assist other CMS Technicians or Working Leaders as required.
  • Prepare necessary reports and participate in required surveys.
  • Maintain files and logs, and perform simple arithmetic computations.
  • Retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License and safely drive a company vehicle.
  • Respond to emergency situations and work extended hours as needed.
  • Perform all meter reading activities including AMR and special reads.
  • Upload/download meter reading data as required.
  • Shut off/lock meters as trained and qualified.
  • Perform flood patrols and other assigned duties.
  • Support Mutual Aid associated with electric restoration.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or GED required.
  • Valid US Driver's License.
  • Basic knowledge of tools.
  • HVAC, mechanical, or plumbing experience preferred.
  • Field experience preferred.
  • Candidates must pass an aptitude test and physical assessment test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in customer service roles.
  • Knowledge of gas meter operations and safety procedures.
