The position involves working as a technician for National Grid, primarily focusing on gas meter reading and associated mechanical work. The technician will be responsible for walking long distances, climbing stairs, and carrying gas meters, tools, and materials. This role requires a professional demeanor as it involves regular interaction with customers, including during challenging situations such as service turn-offs and collections. The technician must be able to work independently in various weather conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, and extreme temperatures. Key responsibilities include leaving missed reading cards according to established procedures, identifying and reporting unsafe or abnormal operating conditions, and installing or replacing automated meter-reading devices. The technician will also perform physical locks on gas meters during emergencies, assist other technicians as needed, and prepare necessary reports while maintaining accurate logs and files. A valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required, as the technician will need to drive a company vehicle for a significant portion of the workday. In addition to meter reading activities, the technician will be involved in uploading and downloading meter reading data, shutting off and locking meters as trained, and performing flood patrols. After six months in the role, the technician may take on additional responsibilities such as field collection work, advanced consumption jobs, and inspections of public assembly buildings. Candidates must pass an aptitude test and a physical assessment test administered by National Grid, and they will be expected to work overtime and participate in the Emergency Restoration Program as required.
