About the position

The State seeks a Metro Editor to oversee city, county, and business coverage in the greater Columbia area and directly supervise a group of reporters. Our journalism focuses on our local communities, and in that role, we have the ability to spotlight problems, highlight solutions, and truly make a difference—all the reasons you got into journalism. As part of McClatchy, a digitally driven company focused on innovation, we operate newsrooms in 30 communities across the United States. The ideal editor will possess the story-identifying and story-writing skills of a great writer or editor, the reader-engagement skills of a strong social media editor, and the coaching skills of a great leader. You will be tasked with using these talents to shape our journalism from story conception to approach to distribution, maximizing reach and impact while driving loyal readership. Smart use of analytics will be vital, as our focus is on serving and growing our digital audience. This is a hands-on position with heavy editing and coaching duties. You will need to lead, direct, collaborate with, and coach colleagues throughout the newsroom. Strong editing and/or writing skills, excellent news judgment, and strong interpersonal skills, including empathy toward staff and readers, are essential. You will also be responsible for developing and implementing growth strategies for the newsroom and individuals, applying analytics smartly, and maintaining an unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism. Enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies, such as AI, is also important, as is comfort with a demanding, fast-paced, and constantly evolving job.

Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years of experience in journalism, with a willingness to consider candidates for their first management role.
  • Strong editing and/or writing skills with excellent news judgment.
  • Ability to lead, direct, collaborate with, and coach colleagues throughout the newsroom.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy toward staff and readers.
  • Comfort with analytics and how to apply them effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify significant stories that matter to readers.
  • Commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies, such as AI.
