About the position

The MFLC Assignment Ready Counselor (ARC) position is a part-time, intermittent role that provides behavioral health counseling services to military service members and their families at Fort Novosel, Alabama. The counselor will work on-demand during events, surges, summer camps, and to backfill for absent counselors. The role requires independent licensure in a mental health-related field and involves delivering non-medical counseling, training, and wellness presentations with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling to adults, children, and youth of service members.
  • Conduct assessments, brief counseling, and consultations, and create action plans for clients.
  • Deliver training and health and wellness presentations, and participate in health fairs and other installation activities.
  • Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Quickly build rapport with service personnel, family members, students, and co-workers.
  • Adapt to new working conditions and varying location rules, adjusting working style as needed.
  • Engage and communicate effectively with military members, spouses, or children in emergent situations.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources and provide appropriate linkages.
  • Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the Points of Contact (POC).

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health-related field or social work.
  • Current licensure required for this position that meets state or customer-specific requirements.
  • Ability to quickly engage and communicate with military members and their families.
  • Advanced knowledge of brief therapy and solution-focused counseling methods.
  • Experience working in a school setting for ARC role in backing up a school position.
  • Ability to traverse various terrains and work in outdoor conditions on military installations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior military service or strong familiarity with military culture.
  • Experience with children and youth, particularly in child and adolescent development/psychology.
