About the position

The MH Unit Secretary/Unit Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the nursing unit by managing communication, transcribing physician orders, and ensuring the efficient operation of the unit. This part-time position requires strong organizational skills, the ability to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, and a commitment to providing quality service to patients and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Transcribes and transmits physician's orders to appropriate areas under the supervision of the R.N.
• Functions as a receptionist on the nursing unit, communicating with physicians, ancillary departments, patients, and visitors.
• Answers telephones, takes messages, and communicates messages to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
• Receives, places, and transfers calls using appropriate telephone etiquette.
• Handles telephone information requests with courtesy, accuracy, and timeliness.
• Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to achieve patient and unit goals.
• Inventories and orders unit stock, ensuring proper supplies are on hand.
• Adapts to changes in workload effectively.
• Initiates patient charts on admission and maintains them in an organized manner.
• Demonstrates complete knowledge and use of all forms related to the position.
• Performs accurately in crises and emergency situations when time is essential.
• Communicates with the R.N. regarding treatments, results, observations, patient complaints, and other pertinent information.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Requires NA/CNA experience.
• Preferred previous clerical/administrative experience.
• Demonstrates competence in phone etiquette and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in a healthcare setting.
• Ability to perform analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
