About the position

The Microbiologist II position at the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) in Boothbay, Maine, involves working primarily in the Water Quality laboratory, providing support for the Biotoxin laboratory as needed. The role includes leading daily laboratory sample processing, maintaining quality control, and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety standards. The position offers opportunities to learn advanced testing methods and contribute to the validation of new microbiological testing techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily laboratory sample processing and scheduling.
  • Maintain quality control for laboratory methods in compliance with the Maine Bureau of Public Health Quality Assurance Manual and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP).
  • Analyze fecal coliforms in seawater and shellfish samples using membrane filtration and multiple tube fermentation.
  • Operate autoclaves and monitor critical temperatures.
  • Prepare media, solutions, and bacterial controls, and perform data entry.
  • Conduct enumeration of marine phytoplankton using bright-field microscopy and shellfish tissue extraction testing with HPLC-UV.
  • Prepare chemical solutions and mobile phases for laboratory testing.
  • Contribute to the validation and verification of emerging biotoxin and microbiology testing methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology or a related scientific field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in a related microbiological field.
  • Basic laboratory skills including pipetting, solution preparation, and knowledge of measurement units.
  • Mastery of laboratory calculations with basic PC software.
  • General safety practices and aseptic techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Laboratory experience in a regulatory setting.
  • Experience researching and running new methods.
  • Knowledge of membrane filtration, bacterial culturing, HPLC, or PCR.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access, R, Python, or other programming languages.
