About the position

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture is seeking a Microbiologist to perform microbiological, chemical, and physical tests on milk and dairy products. This role involves ensuring the accuracy of test results, preparing necessary media and reagents, and participating in audits. The Microbiologist will also assist in updating Standard Operating Procedures and complete administrative tasks related to laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret microbiological, chemical, and physical tests on milk and dairy products.
  • Receive and record sample information and test results accurately.
  • Verify data entry and test results in coordination with other analysts.
  • Prepare necessary media and reagents for sample analysis.
  • Perform all required quality control and quality assurance work.
  • Assist in updating current Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and drafting new ones.
  • Participate in audits as required.
  • Read, review and follow all SOPs and safety manual and procedures.
  • Complete required administrative tasks and documentation.
  • Complete cross-training in other laboratories to act as a back-up analyst.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in microbiology or medical technology and experience in a laboratory setting related to the area of employment.
  • A bachelor's degree in the natural sciences with academic credits in biology, plus work experience in a setting related to the area of employment may be substituted for the required degree.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Ability to read and understand laboratory procedure manuals.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
