About the position

The Microbiology Laboratory Assistant is a part-time role focused on providing essential laboratory support in various areas, including phlebotomy and specimen processing. This position requires practical knowledge of laboratory procedures and involves performing pre-analytical and post-analytical activities to ensure efficient laboratory operations. The role is integral to maintaining high standards of patient care and laboratory quality, contributing to the overall mission of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including collecting patient information and verifying identification.
  • Conduct blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
  • Maintain general equipment, perform function checks, and document maintenance activities.
  • Receive and process patient specimens, including centrifugation and transportation.
  • Aliquot different sample types and load pre-analytical instruments as needed.
  • Perform cytopreparatory staining and accession surgical cases requiring anatomical knowledge.
  • Set up cultures and inoculate petri dishes for bacterial growth.
  • Process, store, and ship blood and blood components using a validated Transfusion Information System.
  • Conduct preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned.
  • Clean and disinfect laboratory equipment and spaces as required.
  • Manage inventory control and supply stocking in the laboratory.
  • Maintain organized workspaces and ensure proper documentation storage.
  • Assist with clerical and receptionist duties as needed.
  • Support laboratory management with special projects and training of new staff and students.
  • Resolve customer service issues and support clinical staff education.
  • Participate in laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
  • Perform waived testing and associated quality control and documentation as applicable.
  • Adhere to compliance plans and protect patient confidentiality.
  • Follow safety policies and handle hazardous materials appropriately.

Requirements

  • High School Education or equivalent is required.
  • Technical skills related to laboratory procedures are strongly preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English are necessary.
  • Ability to read and comprehend text and numbers in English.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office are required.
  • Ability to handle infectious biological specimens and hazardous materials safely.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program is preferred.
  • Six months of experience in AdventHealth Lab is preferred.
