About the position

The Microbiology Laboratory Assistant is a part-time role at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, responsible for performing various laboratory support procedures, including phlebotomy and specimen processing. This position requires practical knowledge of laboratory procedures and support functions, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including collecting patient information and verifying identification.
• Conduct blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
• Maintain general equipment, perform function checks, and document maintenance activities.
• Receive and process patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting.
• Accession surgical cases and set up cultures for testing.
• Perform blood component processing and manage compatible product selection using a validated system.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of workspaces and laboratory equipment.
• Assist in clerical duties, including answering phones and supporting laboratory management with special projects.
• Participate in laboratory performance improvement activities and assist in training new staff and students.

Requirements

• High School Education or equivalent is required.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office are required.
• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, is required.
• Ability to handle infectious biological specimens and hazardous materials safely is required.

Nice-to-haves

• Completion of a phlebotomy training program is preferred.
• Six months of experience in an AdventHealth Lab is preferred.
• Experience performing waived testing with reliability and integrity is preferred.
