About The Position

The Microbiology Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the Clinical and Environmental Microbiology work units within the Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response. This role is crucial for ensuring accurate scientific data and test results related to microorganisms of public health importance, supporting patient diagnosis, epidemiological investigations, and rapid responses to public health threats. The supervisor will manage staff, ensure compliance with established guidelines, and contribute to method development and validation.

Requirements

  • Nine years of relevant experience in biology, method development, laboratory work, or closely related fields.
  • A combination of related education in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or relevant experience equal to nine years.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters or PhD in Microbiology or related field.
  • Two or more years of experience supervising high complexity testing in a regulated laboratory.
  • Demonstrated expertise in method development and validation.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements in laboratory testing.
  • Proficiency in handling hazardous chemicals and operating analytical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily activities of Clinical and Environmental Microbiology work units.
  • Supervise staff performing assays and ensure compliance with established procedures and guidelines.
  • Plan, prioritize, and assign workload to meet program goals and objectives.
  • Establish work schedules and review staff time and absences.
  • Identify training needs and provide necessary training to staff.
  • Perform testing for identification of pathogenic microorganisms.
  • Choose test methods to be performed by laboratory staff and monitor their competency.
  • Contribute to grant applications and track deliverables.
  • Troubleshoot existing methodologies and develop new testing methods.
  • Maintain inventory of testing reagents and supplies.
  • Interpret and provide test results to customers.
