About the position

The Microfiche Digitization Technician will operate a microfiche digitization station to capture digital images of microfiche cards from various collections, making them accessible online. This role is part of the Internet Archive's mission to create the world's largest digital open library in collaboration with universities and libraries. The position offers experience in digital photography, scanning software, metadata management, and preservation of microformat materials.

Responsibilities

  • Digitally capture and review images of microfiche books and manuscripts using documented processes and procedures.
  • Assess image quality and determine if an image requires rework.
  • Troubleshoot issues and communicate with others about problems or solutions.
  • Maintain an established production rate while ensuring high-quality output.

Requirements

  • Ability to work efficiently and independently in a quiet, low-stress work environment.
  • High tolerance for repetitive tasks and expert attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of computers, e-mail, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and move materials (5-40 lbs. each) short distances.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with digital photography and digital scanning software.
  • Familiarity with metadata management and preservation of microformat material.
