About the position

The Mid-Level Chemist at Amentum is responsible for providing professional technical support in a laboratory setting, focusing on increasing efficiency in scientific support. The role involves adhering to quality assurance protocols, maintaining laboratory safety standards, and conducting analyses of research projects. The chemist will prepare test solutions, analyze environmental samples, and document laboratory activities thoroughly. This position requires a strong background in chemistry and experience with advanced laboratory instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional technical support within allocated task resources.
  • Adhere to Quality Assurance Program Plans, Work or Test Plans, Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), and Health & Safety Plans.
  • Document all laboratory activities in specified notebooks.
  • Maintain laboratory spaces according to safety and health criteria.
  • Evaluate laboratory safety procedures for compliance and improvements.
  • Confer with scientists or engineers to analyze research projects and interpret test results.
  • Prepare test solutions, compounds, or reagents for laboratory personnel.
  • Prepare, extract, and analyze target compounds from environmental samples.
  • Conduct quality control tests and evaluate results against data quality indicators.
  • Process, reduce, and report analytical results according to project schedules.
  • Maintain laboratory instruments and troubleshoot malfunctions.
  • Compile and analyze test information to determine process efficiency.
  • Communicate processes, results, and challenges to project management.
  • Write and review technical papers or reports and prepare standard methods.
  • Develop, improve, or customize products, equipment, formulas, processes, or analytical methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from an accredited college or university.
  • 10 years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory setting.
  • Experience directing technical staff.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience with advanced laboratory instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, GC-MS, HPLC, IC, and FTIR.
  • Strong working knowledge of analytical techniques, calibration methods, and instrument maintenance.
  • Advanced understanding of EPA and SW-846 methods for volatile and semivolatile organic compounds.
  • Experience with solid phase extraction (SPE) and sample clean-up techniques.
  • Experience with extraction of semivolatile organic compounds from various sampling media.
  • Experience preparing instrumentation standard solutions by gravimetric and volumetric techniques.
  • Experience conducting quality control validation reviews of laboratory data reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products and analytical software.
  • Experience developing both standard and nonstandard laboratory testing methods.
