About the position

As a Mid-Level Ship Structural Engineer at CACI, you will play a crucial role in supporting our Washington, DC office while having the flexibility to work remotely within the U.S. You will be part of a dedicated team of ship structural engineers focused on developing innovative structural designs for new ships and retrofitting existing U.S. Navy vessels. Your work will primarily support the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Military Sealift Command (MSC), and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). This position requires a blend of technical expertise and collaborative skills, as you will interface with various stakeholders including customers, vendors, and shipyards. In this role, you will assist in the development of new ship structural designs and modifications, focusing on equipment foundations and other structural changes to both steel and aluminum ships. You will utilize advanced analytic tools, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software, to analyze structural designs and ensure compliance with regulatory and customer standards. Your responsibilities will also include generating detailed reports that define your analysis and results, reviewing and commenting on shipyard and internal structural designs, and training less experienced engineers to foster their development. Your contributions will be vital in generating products such as ship structure sizing calculations, finite element models, reports, drawing inputs, and specifications. Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of new ship structural designs.
  • Design equipment foundations and other structural modifications to existing steel and aluminum ships.
  • Analyze structural designs using analytic tools including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.
  • Develop reports defining your analysis and results.
  • Apply regulatory and customer standards for design methodologies and pass/fail criteria.
  • Review and comment on shipyard and internal structural designs.
  • Interface with customers, vendors, shipyards, and internal team members.
  • Train less experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture or Mechanical, Civil, or Ocean engineering.
  • 10+ years of professional engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in the marine industry.
  • 2+ years of experience performing finite element analysis.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely in English.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 10% of the time.
  • U.S. Citizenship and Security clearance eligibility.

Nice-to-haves

  • U.S. Navy or USCG surface ship design, operations or maintenance experience.
  • Experience with U.S. Navy, USCG and/or U.S. commercial ship design standards.
  • Professional experience using FEMAP & NASTRAN FEA Software.
  • Experience laying out ship structure in AutoCAD.
  • Good organization and time management skills.
