About the position

The Mid-Level Software Engineer-Java/AWS at USAA plays a crucial role in the Policy Modernization journey, focusing on building a scalable Insurance Auto Policy product with integrations to various vendors. This position emphasizes creating a unified digital experience and involves working collaboratively across IT teams to deliver compliant solutions. The role requires a strong technical background, a passion for innovation, and the ability to mentor junior engineers while adhering to agile development practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, code, and test complex technical solutions.
  • Investigate and resolve complex application and system technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques.
  • Conduct complex systems analysis and recommend changes in policies and procedures to improve operations.
  • Prepare and install complex solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
  • Follow the software development lifecycle and mentor junior engineers.
  • Review teammates' code and ensure compliance with risk and compliance policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 4 years of software development experience demonstrating depth of technical understanding within specific disciplines/technologies.
  • 2 years of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.
  • Basic understanding of one or more programming languages such as Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL.
  • Developing level of business acumen in business operations, risk management, and industry practices.
  • Experience supporting efforts to address production issues through troubleshooting applications and systems.
  • Experience articulating technical challenges and solutions.
  • Basic understanding of cloud technologies and tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Up to 3 years of experience in large AWS Cloud Migrations and establishing new Cloud environments leveraging EKS, Lambda, and other AWS services.
  • 5+ years of experience with Java Rest Services, REACT, and Database technologies.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with Openshift on-prem deployments and EKS deployments in AWS using strong SRE principles.
  • Up to 4 years of hands-on experience in Terraform development for infrastructure-as-code.
