About the position

The Mid-Level Structural Engineer position at Sargent & Lundy involves applying expertise in materials, structural analysis, and design to support power transmission modifications and upgrades. The role includes working collaboratively within an engineering team, performing structural analysis, and preparing technical specifications while interfacing directly with clients. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for flexibility in work location.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of materials and structural analysis to engineering projects.
  • Perform structural analysis and detailed design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, and foundations.
  • Develop integrated structural designs and perform supporting calculations.
  • Interface directly with clients to communicate technical information.
  • Prepare technical specifications for structural materials.
  • Conduct independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawings.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and suppliers to ensure timely design completion.
  • Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, presenting findings to clients and peers.
  • Engage in peer-learning and knowledge sharing with experienced engineers.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and field verification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Three or more years of experience as a structural engineer, preferably in electrical substation design.
  • Effective communication skills with clients at an appropriate technical level.
  • Ability to perform site visits and attend scoping meetings.
  • Experience in writing support documentation for structural engineering calculations.
  • Ability to complete assignments within budget and schedule with high accuracy.
  • Knowledgeable in structural engineering applications, including analysis for supports and design integrity.
  • Experience with technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models production.
  • Proficiency in MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA 3D, and RISA Floor.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • PE license
  • Experience in the design of light industrial building structures.
