About the position

LJB Inc., a national engineering firm founded in 1966, is seeking a Mid Level Structural Engineer to join our Buildings Practice in Houston, TX. Our firm specializes in civil and structural engineering, as well as geospatial, safety, and environmental services. With a reputation for cost-efficient structural design, particularly in tilt-up and steel detailing, we serve clients across all 50 U.S. states and several countries. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in analyzing, designing, planning, and creating structural components and systems to meet the design goals of our clients. As a Structural Engineer, you will independently complete structural calculations for various systems, including superstructures, foundations, and floor slabs. You will assist in preparing construction documents necessary for vertical building structures and coordinate with design staff to ensure the accuracy of document and drawing production. Effective communication with clients regarding project issues is essential, and you will attend meetings under the guidance of a supervisor. Continuous professional development is encouraged, and you will maintain your technical knowledge through training initiatives, seminars, and professional publications. In addition to your primary responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to analyze situations to improve efficiency and react calmly to high-pressure situations. You will work both independently and collaboratively within team settings, occasionally visiting work sites to monitor project progress and report findings. There may be occasional travel required, and you should be open to future growth into a Project Manager role if desired. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Independently complete structural calculations for structural systems including superstructures, foundations, and floor slabs.
  • Assist with the preparation of construction documents needed for vertical building structures.
  • Coordinate with design staff to ensure accurate document and drawing production.
  • Communicate with clients regarding project issues and attend meetings under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Maintain technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives, including attending seminars and reviewing professional publications.
  • Analyze situations and identify ways to improve efficiency.
  • React quickly and calmly to high-pressure situations.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in team settings.
  • Occasionally visit work sites to monitor project progress and report findings.
  • Meet all safety requirements when visiting a work site.
  • Be open to future growth into a Project Manager role, if desired.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or architectural engineering with structural emphasis required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • 5+ years' engineering experience with knowledge and experience in design of reinforced concrete and/or steel vertical structural engineering projects such as commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings, tilt-up preferred.
  • Experience preparing construction documents, drawings, reports, and supporting documentation required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Cast-in-place concrete and/or steel mid-rise experience a plus.
  • Experience using RAM Structural, Enercalc, and Revit preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in tilt-up design projects.
  • Familiarity with project management principles.
