About the position

The Middle East Program Director is a senior staff position at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, responsible for both academic and administrative functions. This role involves leading the Middle East Program, which focuses on policy-relevant scholarship and collaboration among key stakeholders to address pressing issues in the Middle East and their implications for U.S. policies and relations. The Director will manage a diverse team, oversee research and outreach efforts, and develop strategic plans to position the program as a leading center for knowledge and policy ideas related to the Middle East.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and manages the Middle East Program team, ensuring smooth operations and administrative responsibilities.
  • Supervises and trains staff to ensure excellence in performance and adherence to Wilson Center regulations.
  • Oversees ongoing research, writing, media commentary, and outreach to key policy audiences regarding Middle East developments.
  • Crafts and implements a strategic plan aligned with Center priorities to enhance the program's visibility and impact.
  • Coordinates with the External Relations team to increase audience engagement for the Middle East Program.
  • Collaborates with the Development team to create and implement a fundraising plan for the program.
  • Manages budget, finance, and personnel matters for the office.
  • Recommends regionally relevant scholars for residency and participates in the administration of an international fellowship competition.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status is required.
  • Degree in behavioral or social science or related disciplines, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fluency in a regional language (Arabic, Hebrew, and/or Farsi) is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated subject-area mastery in political science, international relations, or related fields relevant to U.S.-Middle East policy.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic leadership and management of programs, including planning and supervision of staff.

  • Experience in planning, supervising, evaluating, and coordinating the work of others.
  • Documented record of publications and media presence as an expert on related issues.
  • Skills in making effective oral presentations and establishing good working relationships.
