About the position

The Middle East Program Director at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is responsible for leading the Middle East Program (MEP), which aims to foster policy-relevant scholarship and engage key stakeholders to address critical political, social, and economic issues affecting the Middle East and its implications for U.S. policies. The Director will manage a diverse team, oversee research and outreach efforts, and develop strategic plans to position the MEP as a leading center for knowledge and policy ideas related to U.S.-Middle East relations.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and manages the Middle East Program team to ensure effective administrative operations and programming.
  • Supervises and trains staff to enhance the performance and impact of the Middle East Program.
  • Oversees ongoing research, writing, media commentary, and outreach to key policy audiences regarding Middle East developments.
  • Crafts and implements a strategic plan aligned with Center priorities to enhance the MEP's influence and reach.
  • Coordinates with the External Relations team to increase audience engagement for the MEP and Wilson Center.
  • Collaborates with the Development team to create and execute a fundraising plan for the MEP.
  • Manages budget, finance, and personnel matters for the Middle East Program office.
  • Recommends regionally relevant scholars for appointments and participates in fellowship competitions.
  • Advises senior leadership on public policy scholar selections and peer review panel appointments.

Requirements

  • Degree in behavioral or social science or related disciplines, or equivalent experience in the field.
  • Fluency in Arabic, Hebrew, and/or Farsi, both spoken and written.
  • Demonstrated mastery in political science, international relations, or related fields relevant to U.S.-Middle East policy.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic leadership and management of programs, including planning and supervision of staff.
  • Experience in fundraising and resource management for program purposes.
  • Documented experience in directing major programs focused on public policy issues related to the Middle East.

  • Experience in planning and coordinating high-impact public and private programming.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for effective presentations and policy discussions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
