About the position

The Middle Market Lead Underwriter at Ohio Farmers Insurance Company is responsible for managing and servicing a profitable renewal book of Commercial Lines business. This role involves leading renewal strategy meetings, acting as an Account Steward for customers, and making critical decisions regarding risk acceptability and pricing. The Lead Underwriter also serves as a mentor and subject matter expert, providing agency service and maintaining effective communication with both external agencies and internal teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and service a profitable renewal book of Commercial Lines business.
  • Lead monthly renewal strategy meetings and act as an Account Steward for customers.
  • Make responsible decisions regarding risk acceptability and pricing.
  • Review and underwrite individual applications for commercial lines and agribusiness.
  • Calculate possible risk and determine appropriate insurance premiums using actuarial information and statistics.
  • Set accurate premium forecasts and business plans to enable management to set budgets and performance targets.
  • Build and maintain effective communication with agents and internal teams regarding underwriting procedures and practices.
  • Stay current with branch underwriting strategies and assist in strategy execution.
  • Develop and execute an effective agency strategy to grow the business.
  • Notify agencies of adverse underwriting decisions and answer questions from agencies and policyholders.
  • Keep current on state/territory issues and regulations, and share information with team members.
  • Engage in departmental projects and provide subject matter expertise on underwriting procedures.
  • Assist in the training and development of new employees and mentor other underwriters.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years of Commercial Underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related discipline or commensurate experience.
