About the position

The Hanover is seeking a Middle Market Sales Underwriting Specialist to join our team in the New Hampshire and Vermont Territory. This full-time, exempt role is hybrid, allowing for a blend of in-office and remote work. The primary responsibility of this position is to identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Middle Market accounts that drive profitable growth while aligning with our industry segments, appetite, and mix goals. The ideal candidate will apply advanced technical, sales, and analytical skills to provide insurance solutions that help our customers manage risk effectively. In this role, you will demonstrate a thorough understanding of Hanover's strategies and appetites, utilizing both internal and external data to make informed individual and portfolio risk decisions. You will operate within a broad Letter of Authority for all underwriting decisions, managing an assigned book of business that generally involves high technical complexity and coordination. The position requires a strong focus on technical underwriting, where you will apply advanced underwriting concepts, including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification, coverage implications, and loss analysis. You will utilize various underwriting tools and ensure adherence to guidelines while managing your portfolio to achieve key metrics such as gross written premium, profitability, and retention. Additionally, you will engage in sales activities, building relationships with agents and customers to drive growth and enhance agency economics. Your role will also involve preparing and analyzing information related to underwriting decisions and engaging with customers at a high level to secure business opportunities. Responsibilities

  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Middle Market accounts.
  • Apply advanced underwriting concepts including risk selection and loss analysis.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to ensure guidelines are followed.
  • Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium and profitability goals.
  • Review key metrics to uncover trends for new business opportunities.
  • Prepare and analyze information on underwriting decisions and appeals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with agents to drive sales and retention.
  • Make sales presentations to agents and customers regularly.
  • Engage with customers for complex accounts and implement territory business plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-7+ years of Underwriting experience, with a minimum of 3 years underwriting Middle Market accounts.
  • 3+ years of experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business.
