About the position

The Middle Market Underwriting and Sales Manager is responsible for leading a geographic region focused on standard commercial lines. This role involves overseeing a team of underwriters who review and evaluate both new and renewal business in accordance with the company's underwriting guidelines. The manager collaborates with key business peers within the Commercial Lines integrated operating model to develop and implement strategies aimed at achieving and sustaining profitable growth. This includes driving underwriting excellence and developing key performance metrics for both underwriting and sales. In this position, the manager will perform necessary travel to agencies and customers while managing a profitable book of commercial lines business. Leadership responsibilities include fostering a strong underwriting acumen within the team, promoting a customer-focused sales culture, and overseeing agency management and business planning within the assigned territory. The manager will also be responsible for analyzing and refining underwriting and sales metrics, setting goals for written premium projections, expenses, profit targets, and staffing needs, and taking corrective actions as necessary. The role requires monitoring profit-related KPIs and overall Profit and Loss for the region, ensuring the development and execution of policies and procedures that yield profitable underwriting results. As a member of the Commercial Lines Leadership Team, the manager will assist in building annual business plans, guiding strategic choices, and participating in key projects. Additionally, the manager will be involved in the selection and evaluation of staff, implementing changes to improve productivity, and ensuring that priorities and deadlines are met. This position also entails performing talent management responsibilities, managing workload distribution, and completing operational duties that drive team performance.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • 7+ years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or commensurate work experience.
  • Valid driver's license with a driving record that conforms to company standards.
