About the position

The Middle School 8th Grade Volleyball Coach is responsible for coaching and developing student-athletes in volleyball, ensuring their safety and well-being during practices and competitions. This part-time position involves planning practices, overseeing team activities, maintaining records, and fostering a positive sports environment. The coach will work closely with the Athletic Director and other staff to promote a comprehensive athletic program.

Responsibilities

  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in volleyball.
  • Plan and organize an in-season practice schedule and an out-of-season voluntary workout program with the Athletic Director.
  • Provide a comprehensive in-season and out-of-season youth program for the development of student-athletes.
  • Oversee the safety conditions of the facility during practices and competitions.
  • Maintain accurate statistics, records, and results of the season, including entering scores into the MHSAA website.
  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior among team members.
  • Maintain competency in rules and coaching techniques in compliance with MHSAA regulations.
  • Establish eligibility criteria for interscholastic competition.
  • Work closely with the athletic trainer on injury prevention and follow-up.
  • Schedule scrimmages and interscholastic contests with the Athletic Director.
  • Secure the school facility after events and ensure team members are supervised.
  • Be responsible for the safety and well-being of team members.
  • Behave in an exemplary manner at all times.
  • Directly supervise team members at home and away events.
  • Recommend purchases of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Distribute and collect uniforms and equipment, ensuring accountability for inventory.
  • Develop a public communications procedure to inform parents and the community about the athletic program.
  • Complete all MHSAA related rules and safety meetings/trainings as required.
  • Coordinate annual fundraising events following district policies.
  • Ensure no individual without a volunteer application supervises team members.
  • Follow district purchasing and fundraising guidelines and complete necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Assist students in reaching their fullest potential through skill application.
  • Reserve facilities and coordinate transportation arrangements as necessary.
  • Provide leadership and be a positive role model for student-athletes.
  • Show respect for opposing teams, officials, and others.
  • Maintain the integrity of the competition and basic values.
  • Provide constructive criticism and reprimanding when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid teaching certificate and experience in teaching preferred.
  • Prior experience at the middle school level preferred.
  • Certification and experience in first-aid and CPR preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in coaching volleyball at the middle school level.
  • Strong communication skills with students, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory in coaching.
