About the position

The Middle School Athletic Coach at Spotsylvania County Public Schools is responsible for developing a competitive athletic team while emphasizing teamwork, leadership, character, and athletic skills among student-athletes. The coach will oversee the training and performance of the team, ensuring high academic standards and proper conduct among athletes and staff.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining high academic standards for all student-athletes.
• Assist the Athletic Director and Principal in the hiring and/or retention of Assistant Coaches.
• Direct, supervise, and evaluate the performance of all Assistant Coaches of the respective sport.
• Work cooperatively with the Athletic Director to ensure proper insurance coverage for all athletes.
• Collaborate with other Head Athletic Coaches to operate a well-balanced athletic program.
• Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the varsity athletic team.
• Lead, supervise, and assist the Assistant Coaches in their efforts with the team assigned to them.
• Act as a positive influence upon the behavior of members of the athletic staff and teams.
• Engage and direct the team at all varsity contests and supervise athletes at invitational meets or postseason competitions.
• Advise the Athletic Director in the selection and performance evaluations of officials.
• Recommend to the Athletic Director the type and amount of equipment and supplies needed for the sports program.
• Provide for the inventory and care of equipment.
• Advise the Athletic Director of the condition of athletic facilities and needs for their preparation and maintenance.
• Recommend the removal of athletes from the team(s) when training or eligibility regulations have not been met.
• Ensure that all athletes have undergone and passed medical examinations before the regular practice season begins.
• Organize a system for encouraging students to try out for the team and develop support roles such as equipment managers and statisticians.
• Collect and maintain file records, statistics, news items, and photographs for all athletic teams under supervision.
• Observe sub-varsity practices and games.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• At least 18 years of age
• One (1) year of coaching experience in the assigned sport
• CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to enroll and successfully complete a CPR and First Aid training course.

• At least 21 years of age
• Current teacher or classified employee of Spotsylvania County Public Schools
