About the position

The Middle School ELA Teacher, Long-Term Substitute position at Seekonk Public Schools is a full-time role that will last approximately from November 24, 2024, to February 6, 2025. This position is located at Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School and reports directly to the Building Principal. The primary responsibility of the English/Language Arts Teacher is to provide engaging and effective learning experiences in English and Language Arts, adhering to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards. The teacher will be expected to develop and implement lesson plans that cater to the diverse needs of students, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 Plans. In this role, the teacher will utilize various instructional strategies, materials, and technologies to enhance the learning experience. They will also be responsible for assessing student progress through formative and summative assessments, using the results to inform instruction and improve student achievement. A key aspect of this position is to create a positive and respectful classroom environment that supports the physical, social, and emotional development of all students. The teacher will serve as a role model, demonstrating sound behavior management practices and maintaining open lines of communication with students and their families. Additionally, the teacher may provide direction and monitor the activities of a Teaching Assistant (Paraprofessional) if one is assigned to the classroom. Other duties may be assigned as per the SEA contract.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation and regulatory compliance regarding the individual needs of students with IEPs or 504 Plans.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Use appropriate technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  • Use formative and summative assessment to inform instruction and improve student achievement.
  • Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school.
  • Create a classroom environment that is respectful, challenging, and responsive to diverse student needs including the physical, social, and emotional development of all students.
  • Demonstrate sound behavior management practices within the classroom and administer discipline according to school department policies and administrative regulations.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Provide direction for and monitor the activities of a Teaching Assistant (Paraprofessional), if one is assigned to the classroom.

Requirements

  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure in English (5-8) by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Evidence of meeting all Massachusetts Department of Education standards for Highly Qualified Teacher.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults.
  • Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies.
  • Ability to relate well with students, colleagues, parents, and staff.
