About the position

Uncommon Middle School History teachers play a crucial role in fostering self-guided learning among students in grades K-10. The position emphasizes developing subject mastery and understanding the socio-emotional changes that middle school students experience. Teachers are responsible for empowering students' voices and preparing them for academic autonomy and college preparatory focus in high school through engaging instructional strategies and a curriculum that highlights diverse histories.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate student-led discourse on historical topics, encouraging open-ended questions and peer-to-peer debate.
  • Guide students in understanding authors' claims and the importance of sourcing, while developing skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through source analysis.
  • Teach a curriculum that prioritizes the diverse histories of Indigenous peoples, African Americans, women, and ancient cultures.
  • Build an inclusive and safe classroom environment where students can express evidence-based opinions.
  • Meet weekly with the principal or instructional coach to analyze student work and assessments, implementing strategies to differentiate instruction.
  • Build positive relationships with students and partner with families to support learning needs.
  • Engage in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in school-wide meetings to cultivate community and encourage student achievement.
  • Collaborate with grade level teams to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

Requirements

  • Academic expertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or Humanities.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university prior to employment.
  • Eligibility for NJ state certification requirements.
