About the position

The Middle School Soccer Coach at Safe Passages is a part-time role focused on leading and developing a soccer program for middle school students. The coach will be responsible for fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill development while ensuring a positive and inclusive environment. This position requires planning and executing practices and games, as well as maintaining communication with players, parents, and school administrators.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement daily practice plans focused on skill development, team strategy, and individual growth.
  • Provide individualized coaching to improve players' technical, tactical, and physical skills.
  • Foster an environment that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and mutual respect.
  • Organize and supervise all aspects of game day, including travel, equipment, and team logistics.
  • Develop game strategies and ensure proper execution during matches.
  • Analyze opponent strengths and weaknesses and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Establish clear expectations for behavior, effort, and sportsmanship on and off the field.
  • Provide consistent feedback to athletes on performance, and track player progress over the course of the season.
  • Communicate regularly with athletes, parents, and school administrators regarding schedules, progress, and any issues.
  • Serve as a positive role model for athletes, demonstrating strong leadership and professionalism.
  • Build team camaraderie and foster a sense of responsibility among players.
  • Promote a fun, yet competitive atmosphere where students can enjoy soccer and build lasting memories.
  • Maintain and organize all team equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
  • Assist with organizing team meetings and ensuring compliance with school policies and athletic department guidelines.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, ensuring all players are adequately prepared and equipped for practices and games.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated children and youth instruction and facilitation experience (volunteer/paid) working in an urban K-12 environment.
  • Prior coaching experience, preferably in soccer, at the middle school, high school, or club level.
  • Strong understanding of soccer fundamentals, strategies, and rules.
  • Ability to work with children, youth, families, and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds and abilities.
  • High level of cultural competency.
  • Classroom management skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement weekly lesson plans.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working on a team.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
