About the position

The Underwriting Technician role at The Hanover is designed to support the underwriting functions within the Commercial Lines Middle Market team. This position involves preparing key data, following up on outstanding issues, and making recommendations to underwriters to manage a profitable book of business. The role is hybrid or remote, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily support to underwriting in managing all underwriting transactions, service standards, agency relationships, and compliance rules.
  • Perform standard duties utilizing developed procedures for account triage, risk acceptability, file preparation, and analysis of underwriting transactions.
  • Coordinate multiple deliverables to achieve service standards and underwriting guidelines.
  • Provide accurate rating instructions for high-quality output.
  • Build and demonstrate knowledge of underwriting systems, workflows, compliance rules, lines of business, and coverages.
  • Execute within guidelines and appropriately escalate issues to underwriters and managers as per UT Authority level granted.
  • Develop proficiency in basic underwriting analysis, file preparation, report assessment, and compliance rules.
  • Learn territorial differences and business strategies for growth and profitability.
  • Build and maintain close working relationships with agents, underwriters, and peers.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree preferred and/or 1-2 years of commercial lines experience.
  • Ability to develop understanding of basic exposure/control analysis and coverage.
  • Basic commercial lines underwriting knowledge working with over $50,000 in premiums.
  • Awareness of how the various roles/functions fit together and the importance of each.
  • Ability to problem solve and leverage available resources.
  • Service-oriented with a high level of responsiveness.
  • Ability to self-manage workload to meet underwriting goals and service standards.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external partners both verbally and in written communications.
