About the position

American Conservation Experience, Puerto Rico Corps, a nonprofit conservation organization, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking Crew Members to serve directly with the SAJU staff and assist with various historical resource preservation tasks. These opportunities are intended for enthusiastic individuals with a passion for San Juan National Historic Site who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of trails and historic preservation. The primary focus of this project will be the general maintenance of the Grounds and Trails throughout San Juan National Historic Park (SAJU) as well as a broader scope of activities such as repair or maintenance of trails, maintenance of erosion control features, invasive plant removal, planting and seeding of native species.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and Maintain Recreational Trails at SAJU.
  • Remove Vegetation on the Grounds of SAJU.
  • Repair and Maintain Erosion Control Features.
  • Remove Invasive Vegetation at SAJU.
  • Planting and Seeding of Native Species.
  • Santo Domingo Vegetation Removal.
  • General Maintenance of Grounds and Trails at SAJU.
  • Assist the NPS staff in General Maintenance duties.

Requirements

  • Must hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma.
  • Experience in vegetation management, trail maintenance, or other relevant work.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be 18-30 years of age or up to 35 for military veterans.
  • Proficient in Spanish.
  • Must be willing to work hard and bring a good attitude.
  • Adhere to NPS, SAJU, ACE, and local COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Ability to work alone and in a group.
  • Ability to undergo a federal criminal background check.
  • Ability to arrive at San Juan National Historic site prior to 6:30am Monday-Friday.
  • 92% Attendance required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficient in English.
  • Have a positive, can do attitude.
  • Experience with trail maintenance, invasive species, or vegetation management.
  • Experience with tools such as brush cutters, chainsaws, axes, etc.
  • Previous experience in historic preservation.
  • Comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work hard and get dirty.
  • Serious attitude toward safety.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Professional and respectful manner and works well within a team.
