About the position

The Migrant, Refugee, and Immigrant Coordinator at Grand Rapids Public Schools is responsible for overseeing the implementation of district models for teaching English to migrant, refugee, and immigrant learners. This role involves leading summer programs, providing training, coordinating assessments, and ensuring alignment with instructional models. The coordinator will also work closely with community agencies and stakeholders to enhance educational opportunities for these scholars.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and oversee districtwide models for teaching English to migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars.
  • Lead the Summer School Migrant Program in planning, design, and monitoring.
  • Provide training for summer school staff.
  • Develop a rubric to monitor progress of migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars in conjunction with the Office of Assessment & Evaluation.
  • Ensure alignment of language centers with the district's instructional model.
  • Coordinate selection and purchase of instructional materials for migrant, refugee, and immigrant education.
  • Support and train PreK-12 principals and staff as needed.
  • Coordinate identification, assessment, placement, and provision of services for PreK-12 scholars with a Primary or Home Language Other Than English (PHLOTE).
  • Develop training programs for paraprofessionals involved with migrant, refugee, and immigrant education.
  • Interface with community agencies involved in the resettlement of migrants and refugees.
  • Participate in the District's PreK-12 Principal meetings.
  • Coordinate efforts to expand opportunities for parent involvement.
  • Assist schools in monitoring exited migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars.
  • Review and analyze scholar data and develop action plans.
  • Participate in the District's Bilingual Diagnostic team and Child Study Teams.
  • Create and chair a migrant, refugee, and immigrant Proficiency Team for program improvement.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources for recruitment of bilingual/ESL staff.
  • Stay current on practices impacting the education of migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars.
  • Lead Professional Learning sessions.
  • Participate in internal and external data reviews.
  • Assist in implementing research-based best practices for migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars.
  • Coach PreK-12 staff on effective strategies for these scholars.
  • Plan districtwide parent meetings and Family Literacy events.
  • Collect, analyze, and share data on the progress of migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars.
  • Identify and coordinate services for migrant, refugee, and immigrant scholars and their families.
  • Utilize technology to support training and classroom instruction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education.
  • Teacher certification with an ESL endorsement.
  • Trained in the SIOP Instructional model.
  • Work experience in an educational setting.
  • Strong background in curriculum for English Learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate cooperative groups.
  • Possesses functional and technical knowledge to perform job at a high level.
  • Evidence of leadership and positive relationships with staff, scholars, and parents.
  • Ability to focus on critical tasks and objectives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data review processes and experience with educational assessments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in administration or TESOL.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $50K to $70K based on experience.
