About the position

The Military Fellowship - Data Center Operations Engineer position at Verizon is designed for participants of the Department of Defense Skillbridge Program or the Hiring our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program. This role involves working with state-of-the-art systems and infrastructures, focusing on the physical network equipment and ensuring the reliability and quality of the network. The engineer will coordinate hardware support, manage installations, and maintain data center operations, playing a crucial role in the overall functionality of Verizon's network operations.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all equipment and provide hardware support in data center locations.
  • Manage installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities.
  • Write, review, and approve methods of procedures (MOPs) and ensure compliance.
  • Enter Network Change Controls in the NCC system per Network requirements.
  • Handle vendor power installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Monitor and maintain data center physical hardware and cabling, keeping an inventory of equipment and spares.
  • Maintain electrical panel schedules in the data center through the IFP tool.
  • Perform financial tasks related to Data Center activity.

Requirements

  • Must be a current participant of the Department of Defense Skillbridge Program or of the Hiring our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program Cohort 1-2025.
  • Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Driver's license.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, and be on call.

Nice-to-haves

  • A degree in a relevant field.
  • Certifications such as CCENT, CCNA, or CCNP.
  • Training in at least 3 of the following areas: Data networking and communications, wireless technologies, digital communications, operating systems and applications, telecommunications, or power distribution.
  • Knowledge of data transmission facilities such as OC192, OC48, CO48, T3, T1, DS1, 1G/10G native Ethernet, or SONET.
  • Knowledge of data networking protocols including TCP/IP, OSI, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, BFD, SIP, or other LAN/WAN protocols.
  • Experience in physical hands-on installation and troubleshooting of network transport, transmission and layer 1 network devices, including DACS and DCS panels and cross connects.
  • General knowledge of optical transmission equipment administration.
