About the position

The Mill Equipment Operator position is a full-time role located in Brownsville, OR, with a pay range of $20 to $21 per hour. The operator will be responsible for the operation and adjustment of three pellet mills, ensuring the quality of the finished pellets through various testing and inspections. This role requires performing quality control (QC) testing on the finished pellets and testing incoming raw materials to monitor and adjust moisture content. The operator will also be responsible for roll changes on the pellet mills using an overhead hoist and conducting routine inspections of the process to identify any issues or problems that may arise during operation. In addition to operating the pellet mills, the Mill Equipment Operator will assist the dryer operator in maintaining the pellet moisture content between 4-4.5%. This involves measuring and recording the durability, volume of fines, pellet diameter, and performing soak tests on finished pellets to ensure compliance with PFI standards. The operator must continuously monitor for equipment malfunctions, spot fires, and hot bearings, and maintain appropriate feed rates for the pellet mills, making adjustments or changes to rolls and dies as necessary. A clean work area is essential, and the operator will be responsible for clearing sawdust around the mill room. Communication and teamwork are vital in this role, as the operator will assist packaging, loader, and dryer operators during their shift. They will collect and verify shift operator reports, ensuring that all paperwork is complete and accurate, and complete daily Shift Summary Reports. The operator is expected to lead by example with exemplary attendance, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, professionalism, and a safety-first mentality. Participation in down day repairs and cleaning of the process is also required, along with performing other duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and adjust three pellet mills.
  • Perform quality control testing of finished pellets.
  • Test incoming raw materials and monitor moisture content.
  • Change rolls on pellet mills using an overhead hoist.
  • Conduct routine inspections of the process to identify issues.
  • Assist dryer operator in maintaining pellet moisture between 4-4.5%.
  • Measure and record durability, volume of fines, and pellet diameter.
  • Perform soak tests on finished pellets to ensure quality standards.
  • Monitor for equipment malfunctions, spot fires, and hot bearings.
  • Maintain pellet mill feed rates and adjust rolls/dies as necessary.
  • Keep the work area clean by clearing sawdust around the mill room.
  • Perform ash tests on mix and finished pellets and communicate results.
  • Report silo volume visually to the dryer operator.
  • Assist packaging, loader, and dryer operators as needed.
  • Collect and verify shift operator reports and complete daily Shift Summary Reports.
  • Report and monitor incidents, accidents, and maintenance requests.
  • Participate in down day repairs and cleaning of the process.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of the production process.
  • High degree of technical and analytical skills required.
  • Ability to pass company forklift certification.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs safely, nearly waist-high.
  • Ability to stand for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Ability to use catwalks and climb ladders up to 30 feet high.
  • Mechanical and troubleshooting skills for maintenance problems.
  • Ability to perform simple to basic math calculations.
  • Ability to work in high temperature/humidity areas.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
