About the position

The Milton Hershey School (MHS) is seeking dedicated substitute teachers to provide instruction and manage the learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. As a substitute teacher, you will report directly to the principal or their designee at the assigned location. Your role is crucial in ensuring that the educational process continues smoothly, and you will be responsible for following the lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher or their designee. The duties of a substitute teacher may vary daily based on the needs of the classroom, students, or the school, and you may be reassigned to different classrooms as necessary. It is essential that you comply with the instructions outlined by the classroom teacher and maintain a high level of professionalism and ethical behavior throughout your assignments. In this role, you will be expected to execute instructional activities for individual students or small groups, oversee student behavior during various school activities, and ensure that the curriculum is followed as closely as possible. You will also be responsible for providing instruction to special needs children and maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment. The position requires a proactive approach to classroom management and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances within the school day. Your contributions will play a vital role in supporting the educational goals of MHS and ensuring that students receive the instruction they need in the absence of their regular teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the office upon arrival for check-in and review the plans and schedules for the day.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding school personnel.
  • Oversee student behavior in the classroom, during lunch, activity periods, and out-of-class settings.
  • Execute instructional activities with individual students or small groups following the absent teacher's lesson plans.
  • Provide instruction to special needs children who are part of the classroom dynamic.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain efficient classroom management skills.
  • Conduct yourself in a polite and professional manner with all members of MHS, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Perform other duties as required that are part of the classroom teacher's curriculum or duties.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or a valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certification, or a PA Emergency Certification.
  • Completion of the STS Guest Teacher training program if holding a Bachelor's degree to receive a PA Emergency Certification.
  • A clean Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34) that is less than 1 year old.
  • A clean Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance History (Act 151) that is less than 1 year old.
  • A clean FBI Criminal History Record that is less than 1 year old.
  • Proof of a TB test or chest x-ray that is less than 3 months old.
  • Three professional references (contact information) and/or letters.
  • A resume.
  • Routing number and account number for direct deposit setup.
  • Two valid forms of identification for I-9 verification.
  • A valid, working email address that is not a college or university address.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of mandated trainings for Act 126 (Mandated Reporting), Act 71 (Suicide Prevention), and COVID-19 Awareness training.
  • Certificates for specialized training (i.e., Crisis Prevention Intervention).
