About the position

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) works to prevent death, illness, and injury from mining and promote safe and healthful workplaces for U.S. miners. This position is a career ladder progression role within the Mine Safety and Health Inspection Series (GS-1822). The incumbent will conduct a variety of onsite safety and health inspections and investigations of mining operations, prepare written reports, issue citations for violations, and promote safety and health training programs. The work environment is hazardous and may involve exposure to dangerous situations in both surface and underground mining operations.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conducts a wide variety of onsite safety and health inspections and investigations of mining operations.
  • Prepares written reports of inspections and investigations, issuing citations and orders for violations found during examinations.
  • Promotes safety and health among mine operators and workers by directing and participating in safety and health training programs.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance to mine operators to help them solve problems and comply with mine safety and health requirements.
  • Assists mine operators in planning modifications to improve and/or correct deficiencies in operations.
  • Serves as a MSHA representative and information source on mine safety and health.
  • Testifies at judicial hearings regarding notices of violations and orders of withdrawal.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
  • Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • Requires medical exam and must maintain physical requirements.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.
  • Subject to financial disclosure requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mining, mine engineering, or on-site mine safety and health inspection.
  • Graduate level education in fields related to mine safety and health work.
