About the position

The Mine Safety and Health Inspector position at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is responsible for conducting safety and health inspections and investigations in mining operations. The role aims to prevent death, illness, and injury in the mining industry by promoting safe practices and compliance with federal regulations. The position involves direct interaction with mine operators and workers, providing technical guidance, and participating in safety training programs. This is a career ladder position, allowing for progression through various grade levels based on experience and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct onsite safety and health inspections and investigations of mining operations, mills, and related facilities.
  • Prepare written reports of inspections and investigations, issuing citations and orders for violations found during examinations.
  • Promote safety and health among mine operators and workers by directing and participating in safety and health training programs, meetings, and demonstrations.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to mine operators to help them solve problems and comply with mine safety and health requirements.
  • Assist mine operators in planning modifications to improve and/or correct deficiencies in operations, including selecting and installing new equipment.
  • Serve as a MSHA representative and information source on mine safety and health.
  • Testify at judicial hearings regarding notices of violations and orders of withdrawal.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.
  • Must undergo and pass a pre- and post-employment physical examination and maintain physical requirements.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • Must obtain the necessary security/investigation level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mining, mine engineering, or on-site mine safety and health inspection.
  • Graduate level education in fields related to mine safety and health work.
