About the position

Cargill is seeking a Mining Engineer Co-op to join our global team of 155,000 employees dedicated to building a stronger, more sustainable future. This position is designed for students pursuing a degree in Mining Engineering or related fields, providing them with real-world experience in a dynamic and fast-paced underground mining environment. The co-op will be based in either Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH, where they will work closely with production and maintenance teams, project teams, and contractors on critical initiatives and projects. The role aims to expose individuals to both the technical and management aspects of engineering, fostering their interest in long-term career aspirations within the mining industry. As a Mining Engineer Co-op, you will gain hands-on experience in Operations Leadership and/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering. You will learn mining techniques such as surveying, mapping, and mineral processing, while also understanding the importance of safety best practices in the mining environment. The co-op will involve direct supervision of operators and production activities, participation in daily production management meetings, and engagement in process optimization and equipment reliability. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on various engineering projects, contributing to the development and implementation of innovative solutions. Throughout the internship, you will participate in events that provide exposure to leadership, development opportunities, and networking with cross-functional interns across the U.S. Co-ops who demonstrate outstanding performance may be considered for future internships or full-time positions. Responsibilities

  • Work in either Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH underground salt mine locations as part of the Cargill Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit.
  • Lead production or maintenance employees, project teams, contractors, or technical operations teams on critical initiatives and projects.
  • Gain experience in Operations Leadership and/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering roles.
  • Learn mining techniques such as surveying, mapping, and mineral processing.
  • Understand and implement mining safety best practices.
  • Participate in daily production management meetings and direct supervision of operators and production activities.
  • Engage in process optimization and equipment reliability initiatives.
  • Work on engineering projects and champion your own initiatives.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Must be able to work in an underground environment.
  • Geographically flexible and willing to relocate for a co-op/internship opportunity to either Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY.
  • Able to complete a 7-8 month co-op in the Summer and Fall (May/June - December 2025).
  • Proven ability to work optimally with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Must possess a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness in completing work with limited guidance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Sophomores, juniors, or seniors currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program in a relevant field.
  • Mining or heavy industrial co-op or intern experience preferred.
  • Overall GPA of 2.7 or higher preferred.
  • Ability to relate technical knowledge to job-related duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Leadership experience.
