About the position

The Mining Engineer Internship at Cargill offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the mining industry while working in either Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH. Interns will be exposed to both technical and management aspects of engineering, preparing them for future careers in various engineering roles. This internship is designed to cultivate skills, foster innovation, and contribute to sustainable development within a supportive community.

Responsibilities

  • Gain experience in Operations Leadership and/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering roles.
  • Lead production or maintenance employees, project teams, contractors, or technical operations teams.
  • Learn mining techniques such as surveying, mapping, and room and pillar mining operations.
  • Work with electrical engineers to understand high voltage power infrastructure and control systems.
  • Participate in daily production management meetings and comprehend MSHA federal regulations.
  • Develop business cases, manage budgets, and oversee project management responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Must be able to work in an underground environment.
  • Geographically flexible and willing to relocate for the internship opportunity.
  • Able to complete a 12-week internship in Summer 2025 (May/June - August 2025).
  • Proven ability to work optimally with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Sophomores, juniors, or seniors currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program.
  • Mining or heavy industrial co-op or intern experience preferred.
  • Overall GPA of 2.7 or higher preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
